This workshop will bring you up to date with the latest neuroscience research and theories of play, and how this applies to play therapy practice. Through interactive discussion and case examples, it will offer practical frameworks and therapeutic applications for both your individual therapy with the child, and your work with their parents/caregivers or other systems around them (e.g. education).

Key learning objectives:

1) Understand the most recent neuroscience research and theories of play, and how this applies to play therapy.

2) Identify the neurobiological mechanisms of play in your child client presentations, how they feature in their therapy sessions, and how to effectively work with these.

3) Identify therapeutic play approaches for children through the lens of Polyvagal Theory.

4) Identify therapeutic play approaches for children through the lens of the Neurosequential Model of brain development.

5) Understand and articulate the role of rough and tumble play in child development.

6) Utilise the information and frameworks discussed to more effectively communicate with parents/caregivers about your play therapy work with their child.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This workshop is essential for Play Therapists and also highly relevant for all clinicians who use play-based approaches in their therapy/counselling with children – e.g. psychologists, social workers, counsellors, occupational therapists etc. It is also suitable for those working more broadly with children/parents/families across the community services, OoHC and education sectors.
