Our Be My Co-Therapist™ approach to child and play therapy is based in our understanding that children develop and heal in the context of their attachment relationships, and the most effective change occurs for children when their important adults are involved in the change process.
This workshop goes right to the heart of identifying a child’s primary therapeutic needs and processes of change, shaping these into highly specific therapeutic goals, and from this, developing individualised Therapeutic Response Plans for parents/caregivers/educators to implement in the home and school environments.
In contrast to traditional behaviour management plans, Therapeutic Response Plans promote development and recovery in line with the child’s therapeutic goals. The goal is to extend therapy beyond the therapy room – to create many repetitions of the reparative experiences children require for recovery and/or development.
With case examples from individual therapy, education and Out of Home Care settings, this workshop will be highly practical. Participants will be guided through each step of the process and by the end of the workshop will have developed a Therapeutic Response Plan relevant to one of their own clients.
Key learning objectives:
1) Articulate the rationale for Therapeutic Response Plan with parents/carers and other relevant adults in the child’s system.
2) Identify children’s therapeutic goals and design intervention plans through a needs-based approach.
3) Develop individualised Therapeutic Response Plans for children based on their therapeutic goals, for implementation by parents/caregivers/educators in the home and school settings.
4) Utilise a therapeutic process for engaging with parents/caregivers/educators/Care Teams that promotes collaborative practice.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
This workshop is essential for all practitioners working therapeutically with children and/or parents/caregivers/educators – e.g. psychologists, play therapists, counsellors, social workers, Behaviour Support Practitioners, occupational therapists, foster care workers, family support workers etc. It is also highly suitable for those working more broadly with children/parents/families across the community services, Child Safety Services, OoHC, Therapeutic Residential Care and education sectors.
